Create a Personal Development Plan

by Andrew Brown

The good news is if you are reading this you have already taken the first step towards improving your life - recognizing a need for change. All too many people go through their lives not seeing the opportunities just within reach with only a few changes in how they see and interact with the world. The other step you've taken is looking for help. A few people are blessed with enough talent that they cam be almost entirely self-sufficient, but most of us will need the help, support, and advice of people with more experience or resources than ourselves, and it would be foolish not to take advantage of these things.

A development plan is the next best step you can take towards improving your life. It doesn't have to be a difficult process, but it will help to give blueprint on how to go forward and cement your goal of where you want to be in the future.

First Questions

When you start to create your plan you need to begin with the most basic questions.

Where am I now?
Make a quick inventory of your life at this moment. What are you doing? What is it that is motivating you to want to change? You need to be honest here, and this can be a little frightening at times so feel free to jot down a few quick notes and come back to this.

Where do I want to be?
Write a clear statement of where you want to be after making your change. Focus on the results. You want more money? Try to write down instead what that money will bring you i.e. a feeling of security, more time with your family, the ability to help others.

How do I get there?
Outline a list of what you need to do in order to reach your goal. Is there a specific skill you need to learn? Something you need to clear off your plate first?

Filling in the Details

Now your the development plan is well underway. In broad strokes, your goal and how to get there has been outlined, but before committing this down to a final development plan it is worthwhile to work out some of the specifics.

What can help me? What will get in the way?
Look at things both in yourself, and in the world around you. List down the strengths and skills you have, as well as some of your weaker areas. Then think about the people and resources that are available. Who and what is there to help you if you need it, and who is going to get in the way. A common way to organize this information is in a S.W.O.T. chart.

What is the first step?
You may not know every step along the path, but you can almost always see the first step you need to take. Get this written down so you can get this done. Be realistic though, willpower and discipline are not infinite. Make sure each step you decide to take is an achievable one.

How will I know when I get there?
This is very important. Write a very clear description of what your life will be like after you achieve your goal. How will your life be different from how it is now? What will you have? What will you be able to do?Really take the time to think this through and be as specific as possible.

Putting it Together

After answering the questions above then next step it easy. Create the actual plan by looking back through what you've written down so far and organizing it into a coherent and logical process that you can follow on the way to your goal.

Why bother?

This is just one of many ways that you can use to help you reach your goals by taking firm steps to change your life. Writing down your goals, and the steps to reach them is a way of clearly defining what it is you want. The more clearly the final destination is in sight, the easier it will be to stay motivated.

Having a plan in writing is also a great way to see and celebrate your progress as you move forward. Goals such as 'make more money' or 'be a better person' usually fail because they are too general. There is no way to objective assess when the goal has been reached. Is more money $100 more, or $10,000? Is being a better person just spending more time with your family, or creating more memorable and meaningful experience with your loved ones? Without knowing where you are going you will never know when you get there.

With years and coaching and management experience, Andrew Brown built up an interest in personal development and growth after struggling to get better results both for his clients and himself.

Come To Be A Better "You" By Having These Personal Advancement Tips

A successful personal development program, will take more than a desire to improve oneself. Well-chosen goals and thorough planning are vital to getting the best out of personal development. However, it does not take a huge amount of studying to learn how to plan well for personal development. Tips like these can help anyone set goals for themselves and reach them quickly.

To get the most out of life avoid procrastination at all costs. Putting something off for the future just means you'll never get around to doing it. The first step is always the hardest, but once you've started doing something important you'll find it gets easier and easier to keep going.

There are many different breathing techniques you can use in order to relieve stress. Try the different breathing methods and find one that works for you and helps you the best. You will soon find this is a great way to manage your stress.

If you want to develop your personal self start doing more things for others, selflessness is a great trait. You can give up the needs of yourself to help someone else in need. It shows that you are humble and that you are a humanitarian. This can lead to great happiness.

When setting a self-help goal, it is important that you remain realistic in your expectations of yourself. The goals you set should be challenging, but not overwhelming. Making goals that are too easy or too difficult can cause unnecessary stress and make you less likely to follow through, reducing any progress that you would be able to make in your self-help program.

Walking is great exercise and a healthy way to reflect and let things out in prayer and thought. It is also very healthy for you, physically. While you are reducing stress, you are also treating your body right. Try walking sometime, and see just how beneficial it is to your psyche.

Experience is the teacher, however, insight is the reward. You must learn from mistakes, failures and even successes to better understand how to succeed in the future. This foundation of experiences not only teaches, but will soon lead to insight of outcomes based on past successes. Being able to expect an outcome based on knowledge of past is much better than hoping.

Perform a few selfless acts. Do something for someone else. They don't have to be less fortunate than you. You don't even have to like them very much. Doing something selfless for someone else is just a good thing to do. It will help another and make you feel better about yourself.

Exercise to improve your body, mood and life. Nothing lifts spirits and awakens minds better than a blood-pumping exercise regimen that also adds tremendous value to a healthy lifestyle. Plus, when you are fit, you will naturally have a lot more confidence, and that will carryover into everything that you do.

Give yourself a routine. Depression and similar negative moods can be caused by boredom, stress, and a wide variety of other things. Creating a routine for yourself and sticking to it can eliminate many of these factors. You will stay busy and accomplish far more with your day, alleviating potential guilt.

Set deadlines. Deadlines are an important part of keeping you on track in attaining your goals. You should set completion deadlines as well as interim deadlines for each. Deadlines should be realistic, but at the same time should also challenge you toward fulfilling what you have determined it is that you want to do.

Helping others is one of the most effective ways of helping yourself. Self-sacrifice is self-actualization, and in lending a hand your true colors show and shine. You will also boost your self-esteem when you donate your time or resources to others and probably find out along the way that you have a lot more to be grateful for than you might have realized.

Create solutions instead of problems. People will appreciate someone who solves issues instead of creating new ones. If an existing issue is ignored by everyone, be the one who is going to solve it instead of avoiding it or criticizing the lack of action of others. When making changes, consider what kind of issues this will mean for everyone.

Having integrity and a clear conscience will keep your self-esteem up and self-esteem is pivotal to personal development! Do not cut corners, make excuses or give yourself other reasons to feel like you are not giving life your best effort. All of those little things will add up to a weight that will burden you with guilt and stop your success dead in its tracks, not to mention keeping you from getting a good night sleep.

Putting these tips to use will take you closer to the real happiness that you deserve. Your personal development will be enhanced if you choose even one of them to make your own. There is no need to let any of the obstacles in your way, prevent you from achieving success.

Self Improvement - The 5 Step Personal Development Plan

Personal development has become increasingly popular in today's busy world for everything from career improvement and weight loss to public speaking. While the methods and tools used to achieve the desired personal development outcome may vary from high priced seminars to moderately priced books, there are a number of simple steps that can be used to get you started on the right path to reach your own personal development goal, such as:

1) Identify the Cause
A good starting point with personal development is to look at how you got to where you are right now. For example, if your area of personal development relates to weight loss then look at what lifestyle factors contributed to your weight problem to start with. Write down everything you can think of that contributed to the problem and then analyze how you can modify each factor to get the result you desire.

2) Goal Setting
It is essential to have a clear goal in mind to achieve your own particularpersonal development requirements. Ask yourself exactly what it is that you wish to achieve and the more refined and clear your goal the more chance you will have of successfully attaining it.

3) Make a Plan
Once you have decided on your goal then formulate a plan that details the steps you will take to reach your goal. Use the details you uncovered when identifying the cause of the problem and expand on these to incorporate as much detail as possible on how you can achieve your personal development goal.

4) Focus and Commitment
Once you know your goal and have designed your plan you then need to focus on your goal and commit to the plan you have designed. Set aside a certain amount of time each day to work on your plan and do not allow general daily chores to distract you from what you need to do. Once you have become accustomed to working on your plan each day it will become a habit and therefore easier over time to stick too.

5) Look for Inspiration
It will be of great benefit to look for inspiration from others that have overcome the same personal development challenge as your own. This can be in the form of books, seminars, courses or even a person from your local community that you may be able to contact to get some tips or advice.

Personal development is about identifying areas of your life that you wish to change for the better and having an attitude of continual self-improvement. No matter which area of your life you intend to improve by following the steps outlined above and committing to the plan you can be assured of achieving your goals and in doing so gain more confidence to not only achieve other personal development goals but do it quicker and easier each time.
